I'm curious to know if juror #23, J. Brown was related to Grandpa Will Brown? I've heard that at least on one occassion, Grandpa Brown, was allowed to serve a sentence-in jail during the day, and go home in the evening. This is interesting and similar to todays "house arrest". In 1921, the $154 fine imposed was a considerable amount of money. I beleive his production of moonshine resulted from various factors: his socio-economic status, the lack of sufficient fertile land in the area, the lack of jobs and industry in the American economy and his responsibility and desire to feed his family. There wasn't any governmental assistance of any kind in 1921. It seems he did what he could to ensure the survival of his family.
